My Friend's Discovery

A friend recently told me about her experience of being new and finding her place in an organization. She said at first, it seemed that some people knew exactly what was going on and what to do. They seemed to present themselves as knowledgeable and authoritative. Then she realized that, in fact, perhaps they were simply out-spoken. Seems insightful. We all have a place and a voice.

Yes, we all have a place and a voice. One of my favorite authors, Carolyn Heilbron, talks about power struggles not characterizing them as strong vs. the weak, but rather she defines it that, given the respective issue, those who should be at the table have a place and a voice.

Your friends observation troubles me somewhat, tho, in that while, yes, some people are simply outspoken, others do have an ability (perhaps a charism, i.e., a gift) to adapt quickly, or to lead in new, unforseen situations. Sometimes these people are simply very practical; or able to read clues from the environment, pick up what's going on and learn quickly.

With respect to one's health, your Little Prince example was great. I found that when I've been confronted with uncertain news concerning health tests I've had in my life, it's much like that. With the addition tho, and I think you live it too, that one's lighthouse in the fog of fear, unknowing, and uncertainty is God.

In Christ,
Susan

ps we are preparing for Holy Week, starting this Friday evening. David is eagerly looking forward to Pascha--the services and feastings. I am soooo grateful to hear him express this and I know it is the Lord's doing.
